My First ATC

Well this certainly has been a learning process! I now know what I do and don't want to do in making these. I need to move my flowers over next time around so they are not so close to the outer edge. The rick rack covered the leaves up somewhat. But I am not even certain I like the rick rack so will have to think on that one. I did like finishing the edges off with the buttonhole stitch. After I had the top piece done I fused it to a wool backing. The fusible gave it some stiffness. I had said these were to be in our style. Since I work a lot in wool I thought I would go that route. Making around 12 of these I am beginning to think it would be a lot easier to embellish a larger piece of fabric and then cut it into 12 pieces. But I know that is not the purpose of our small group doing this. I believe the purpose is so we each have a little bit of each other!

your first go turned out wonderfully! And I don't think there's a reason not to do this work as a larger piece and then cut it into twelve -- you'd be planning on cutting it up, so each card would be "planned" in a sense, and each would still need the edges to be finished, but it its easier to work on a bigger piece, do so :)

I agree. I like this one, and I think the rick rack is fine. I would probably like it better without the rick rack, but that's me, personally. I think the card nicely executes your original design.

Laura: 1st- I like your little card
2nd- I have been trying to comment for 2 days on your bible block but blogger has been soooooo uncooperating.
3rd- About your bible block. I think your daughter will love the quilt. I was wondering where you got your bible patterns. My sister is a minister and I use bible theams and block patterns on her stoles which I make for her. If you wish to check out some of my religous patterns, I would love to have you visit my blog.

I love your card. There's a whole lot of detail for such a little space. You're going to have so much fun with your group and these cards.

I like it! But I'm not "in love" with the rick-rack either. I could see it with a really tightly hand done over cast stitch in the red thread on those two edges..? Sort of sloppy finished..if that makes sense? Or a cross-hatch sort of thick red thread stitch on those edges.

It's always hard with the first one, but you made a great job of it!

It's a wonderful first effort Laura..looks very much like your style..except maybe the rick-rac...but I like the color it adds.

Neat block below also..but it does look like a lot of work, and just that much harder if you don't love it. Hang in there!!! Hugs, Finn

The flowers are wonderful! The rickrack is cute, but it does sort of take attention away from the flowers. Maybe a smaller size of rickrack? Or substitute stitching in red ... cross-stitches or something? Otherwise, it turned out wonderful ... really nice for your first ATC!

I like this - isn't it amazing how much detail you can get on such a teeny tiny little quilt!

That is a nice idea -- ATC, I had never heard of that before. Your card is lovely and does look like a bit of work.

I agree that the rick rack looks like it doesn't belong. Even just a blanket stitch around the edge I think would be good.

How is the dog? Is he better now?

Well Laura, your ATC is quite a success: You've learned a great deal in just one little piece!

I love the red edging that you've made from wool!

Are you using an actual playing card as a base? Or just that size?

You know...some artists do create one large piece and cut it up. Sort of an artistic puzzle. Not a bad idea!

I"m not a big rick rac fan, but I think it could work with the flower moved over maybe. Or maybe it is just too small for it?

I can't wait to see all the ones you get! You have to promise me you will send me pictures!

Hey Laura it's a lot of work, but you'll be glad you did it the hard way when you receive your cards from your friends, as their efforts will no doubt be amazing!
